Chick-Fil-A, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 258

Essay

In the last several months, Chick-fil-A President and COO, Dan Cathy, has made statements to various media outlets condemning the idea of same-sex marriage.  To radio and the press, Cathy has stated that Chick-fil-A, as a company, firmly supports a Biblical definition of marriage that only recognizes a union between two people of the opposite sex for life.  After his statements, reporters gathered information on the fast food chain and discovered that the company contributes millions of dollars to charities that are firmly anti-gay.  Cathy even goes so far as to endorse the position that the United States is under danger of divine retribution for permitting gay marriage. The fallout from statements made by Cathy was wide-ranging.  Jim Henson removed toys from Chick-fil-A kids’ meals, the mayors of Boston and Chicago began plans to block construction of restaurants in their cities, and pro-equality and pro-gay groups staged kiss-ins at Chick-fil-A restaurants.  Unfortunately, the company and Cathy’s conservative social views have gone largely unnoticed by the public.  Additionally, in the United States, private businesses are allowed to endorse any views they wish as long as they do not discriminate in hiring practices or in providing goods and services or commit any other hate acts.  The appropriate manner in which to protest the anti-equality stance of Chick-fil-A is to deny the chain business.  The models of the mayors of Boston and Chicago, denying permits to build restaurants in their cities, should be followed to show the company that the general public does not approve of the views of the company.
