DNP-level nurses must embrace the knowledge that they have acquired and adapt it to a given subject area and project as effectively as possible. In this advanced practice nursing role, it is essential to develop an understanding of this specialty and how to effectively adapt it to a variety of conditions within the nursing profession. DNP nurses must be educators, clinical experts, and support evidence-based practice solutions, among other areas; therefore, they must possess cross-training in a variety of areas to meet the goals and objectives of this position (Dreher & Smith Glasgow, 2011). Core competencies must be applied across these areas and in working towards solutions to identified problems that require further evaluation, such as the project I am undertaking in evaluating the chronic care model in the context of HIV/AIDS.

The AACN has established core competencies upon which we, as practitioners, must develop our own interests and apply this knowledge to a wide range of problems (2006). It is important to identify the core competencies that are aligned with these variables, including Essential VI: Interprofessional Collaboration for Improving Patient and Population Health Outcomes (AACN, 2006). This concept conveys the importance of working with vulnerable populations in a variety of settings and enabling them to receive high quality care and treatment under a variety of conditions, such as HIV/AIDS. It is important to associate this core competency with my chosen project and to apply expert knowledge regarding the chronic care model in order to provide support, guidance, and treatment to patients with HIV/AIDS. This population is highly vulnerable and requires continuous treatment in order to prevent further decline and symptoms; therefore, nurses must be prepared with expert knowledge to manage the disease and identify other key variables regarding the chronic care model that will influence outcomes for this group of patients, given their challenges, limitations, and overall quality of life (Anderson, 2015; Chang & Johnson, 2014).
