What is the mission?
There is a suspected terrorist plot being prepared in China against the United States. The plot has been duly investigated for over three months already. It has been related by the first group of spies that have been sent in the country for investigation that the plot was a legitimate course that is being lead by the communist party in China. Evidences were strong, but still, the targeted individuals belonging to the group being suspected to promote the plot’s completion need to be captured in the act which has so far been the failure of the first group. A top-secret CD is the focal point of the investigation. The CD particularly contains information and program simulation on how the attack shall be completed. There had been a recollection of a new group which is composed of four particular spies to serve as the Director, the Executive Assistant Director and two other Directors who are supposed to lead a team of agents who are to play important roles in looking for an indicative proof that the plot is true through locating the CD and exposing its contents.
What is the purpose of the mission?
As stated earlier, the mission is directed towards finding the CD that contains the plot information about the terrorist attack being planned. Finding and exposing the information of that particular CD is the primary purpose for this mission. It is very important that the assured plan is exposed as it will mark the entrance of the special team for capturing the individuals and/or union groups involved in the plot. However, as important as it is, the CD is a well protected element of information content that the supposed terrorists are highly valuing, which means that they would certainly take extra precautions to make sure the information does not fall in the wrong hands. Encrypted messages are also expected to be found in the CD which remains to be decoded so as to make sure that it is the information being searched for.
Why must your best three spies be the ones involved? What special abilities do they have that make them “special?”
The complexity of the process is specifically definite when it comes to requiring one agent that has expertise in computer science and the complexities of program that also involves decrypting and decoding hidden programs and messages within a particular software. Another requirement entails the need to have one agent that serves as a distraction to the actual plan and another that has a definite connection inside who would be standing as the entrance agent to the institution/group to be penetrated.
How will the operation be carried out, and what are the complications (dangers) they’re likely to confront?
The handlers of the CD are very few. The information it has is very much protected which means that only the handler has the information and no one else. Protecting its valuable information then could be expected to be handled with specific care by the group. It has been learned that only the three top officials of the group know who actually has the CD. And to protect it, the entire group adheres to a particular tradition that binds them together in protecting the said element of terrorism. It could be likened to the black box in Shirley Jackson’s Lottery, whereas the black box has been tried to be replaced so many times and yet it never happened because the people did not want to disturb the tradition that it carries along with it. In the same manner, the Chinese group to be confronted follows a certain tradition in line with protecting the CD and would rather die that disturb the worth of the information for their group. Penetrating successfully within the group then is a crucial part of the situation.
Why do you believe that this mission will be successful?
Like Jimmy Cross in Tim O’Brien’s The things they carried, the three official agents that have been included in the meeting have a direct concern for their group members. Assuring that each one follows the rules and are protected at most, these officials are ready to make assumptive directions on how each of their members are to place themselves in the organization while motivating them to remain loyal to the team. The personal connection they intend to establish with their staff while retaining the professional level of correlative operation with everyone creates a level of loyalty that cannot be easily broken. In the process of sending in particular agents to penetrate the target organization is a sure risk, nonetheless, with strong loyalty thriving among each member of the team renders the operation more directed towards successful results that are sure to make the mission worth planning and taking into account.
While the target group of individuals are deemed blindly loyal to their cause and their organization like that of the town’s people in Shirley Jackson’s story when it comes to the protection they are imposing on the black box, the team of agents assigned to complete the mission also has the sense of loyalty that is grounded upon personal concern and specific adherence to their duty as agents that could protect or forego the security of their country and their fellowmen. With the lives of many at stake, it is expected that the agents/spies involved in the case are to protect their integrity during the whole process of solving the issues on confirming terrorist plans from the target group.
