In Bowers v. Hardwick, the court states that one of the reasons why Georgia’s sodomy statutes withstood constitutional challenge is as follows (“Supreme Court” 11):
Ga.Code Ann. § 16-6-2(a) (1984). States that homosexual as well as heterosexual activities should be accepted without hostility as long as consensual sex is involved, not rape (“Supreme Court” 11). Many people would find that homosexual romantic or sexual relations should never be tolerated as it is considered as a sin from God.
Presently, we live in a modern world where more and more people are becoming open minded on how things should be in society. This attitude was almost not present in our society during the 1960’s, 1950’s and even earlier. People during these times always believed things would be better if they deal with situations in traditional ways. However, as time progressed they begin to realize that being stuck in this belief do not give them opportunities to be more creative problem solvers and to be stronger in life. Therefore, they become more open to solving things through “out of the norm” strategies.
With this in mind, people begin to realize it is about time they are able to accept their differences as assets, not liabilities. After realizing this, they begin to open their eyes that homosexual relations are just among the components in our world which actually contributes to the varieties humankind possess. By doing so, stereotyping and discrimination against homosexual relations begin to lessen more and more as time goes by. This is evident in a poll from Gallup which yields a result of 56 percent of people saying homosexual relations should be legalized versus 40 percent of people who does not agree these relations should be legalized (“Gay And Lesbian Rights” 1). In my opinion, it did more good than harm when people begin to become more open minded to accepting homosexuality. At least by being more open to it, arguments and disagreements among homosexual and heterosexual people are drastically lessened.
More good than harm has also been acquired by the society population by being more acceptable of these relations as lesser lawsuits are filed by homosexuals accusing organizations and public entities of denying services and benefits to them due to their sexual orientation. Lawsuits and legal actions only inculcate more hatred than love in our society.
It is definitely recommendable that people become more open to differences in society we all have. By doing so, we inculcate friendlier relations all around us. We would not have to be worried about any abuses we now still have in our society.
Most of the emotional and physical abuses in our society arise from differences we have as people. Such major differences we have to deal with are sexual orientation preferences. Most of the people who think homosexual orientation preferences are sins in the eyes of God are people who actually devote a lot of time and effort in serving the Lord. They feel that being different and failing to live by God’s word is a sin which might make them suffer huge karma in the long run. This belief is usually deemed as a stereotypical belief, hence, it is not given sufficient consideration by most people who value diversity.
