Class Review, Essay Example

Essay

As I began this course early in the semester, I had a prejudiced understanding of writing and art.  When I first entered the class, I had the notion that art was just about a grouping of colors mixed with brush strokes or even the types of Broadway musicals and operas that people often call the arts.  As the class moved forward, I quickly understood that art was not just the work that was produced, but it was a way that people express themselves and their beliefs, values, or interpretations of the world.  Part of my major interests in college are the intricacies of business, so I am very familiar with the role that ethics plays in business and management.  I was completely shocked to hear that ethics is an important factor in art as well.  Our discussions in the forum and the readings helped to highlight many of the current ethical issues that artists face every day.

Probably the most interesting project we performed was the interdisciplinary research project where we performed local historical research.  This project helped me become very creative in my research methods as well as in how I presented the information through writing.  One of the major challenges was to contact local individuals at the museum and library to help with discovering many local historical events and stories about individuals that have lived in the area that performed many great feats.  This class has been very constructive and has helped me to express myself in a more creative way and to view the world as a creation in itself.  Instead of being trapped by the rules of society, I see that there is more freedom in the way we can express ourselves and what is considered acceptable.  Art and creativity are very important in our culture, and I think that it is important for these aspects to be cherished and not to be pushed aside and forgotten.
