Classroom Cell Phone Ban, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 329

Essay

I choose to discuss the issue of classroom cell phone use, or the prohibition thereof, because I think it provides an interesting angle on a variety of modern issues.   The subject is not, ironically, actually about communication and restrictions of it; rather, it involves basic concerns regarding how individual liberties are perceived, modern senses of entitlement and/or dependence on technology, and what is truly appropriate within the classroom environment.

My audience, I would imagine, has opinions on the subject very much related to exactly what position each member occupies in the classroom.  I would anticipate that most students perceive a cell phone ban as an unnecessary restriction, if not a violation of their rights, although I also believe many share my impatience with the interruptions caused by the devices.  Regarding professors, I would be somewhat stunned to learn of any who would oppose such a ban.

As for evidence to be presented, this goes to my only concerns with the paper.  That is to say,  I do not regard this as a stance, or even subject, aided by the findings of studies or samplings of demographics and opinions.   Evidence as such here is, in my estimation, irrelevant, save for that evidence my own perceptions have set before me.  The issue is controversial precisely because it touches upon, and generates, strikingly personal viewpoints; consequently, data is both difficult to apply in any meaningful way, and not pertinent.   This being the case, I rely on my own application of reasoning, taking in the tides of feeling surrounding the subject.   Moreover, while I believe my rationales are sound, my concern is that the pervasive sense of entitlement students – and others –  manifest about the cells will divert them from the elemental arguments.   More exactly, my position centers on the essential fact of disruptions as being detrimental to a classroom, and for all concerned, and I am apprehensive that the omnipresent use of cells virtually everywhere will blind my audience to this basic reality.
