Clinical Article vs. Research Article, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 496

Essay

A clinical article often has a direct impact on the way health care and other medical services are provided because it provides the evidence required to make necessary changes. Clinical articles selectively review the medical literature associated with a broad topic. The articles are written by the researcher, but is not peer reviewed and can be found in variety of publications. In a well written clinical article, the topic being discussed is one of common interest to the medical community and it has relevance to family practice. The data in this type of article can be quantitative and qualitative. The data is based on clinical outcomes associated with morbidity, mortality, and quality of life that has been gathered from primary care populations that participate in the study. An example of a clinical article can be seen in this article entitled “Maternal caffeine intake during pregnancy and child cognition and behavior at 4 and 7 years of age” (American Journal of Epidemiology, 2015).

A research article is written by the researchers with the intention of making specific discoveries known to the entire scientific and medical community. Research articles are exclusively found in peer reviewed scientific or medical journals. These types of articles are supported by clinical data that is usually quantitative in nature. Research articles often include an abstract, a description of the research, the results of the study, and the significance of the results relating to the scientific or medical community. An example of a research article is seen in the article entitled “Biomarkers for atopic dermatitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis” (Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2015). In conclusion, clinical articles are associated with a broad topic, they are not peer reviewed, they are found in many publications or websites, they do not contain an abstract, they can include qualitative or quantitative data, and they can have a direct impact on the medical community. In contrast, research articles investigate selective topics, they are peer reviewed, they are found only in medical or scientific journals, they have an abstract, they usually only contain quantitative data, and many of them will only indirectly affect the medical or scientific community.
