What are the advantages and disadvantages of best-of-breed application systems solutions? What are the advantages and disadvantages of Integrated application systems solutions? Discuss any experiences you have encountered with either of the solutions.

Perhaps the best way to consider the advantages and disadvantages of the best-of-breed application systems solutions is to compare it to the next best software alternative: Integrated Suite. Since the introduction of ERP software to the general public, there has been a consistent debate about which software is better.

Best-of-Breed is a standalone system that offers excellent function in one area. On the other hand, integrated systems offer modules  for several different functions but at a much lesser depth than the best-of-breed standalone system. The functional disparities between the two systems of ERP software are becoming less discernible .

Best-of-breed proponents cite the large amount of features for one function that they get  to experience.  Areas such as accounting or production management are separate but with many more features than offered with the integrated systems.

Integrated systems give the user the wide array of features in one system, which is an advantage over the multiple systems needed when using standalones. Furthermore, the technology of the integrated systems has evolved in recent years to become more in depth in its multiple features. Likewise, best-of-breed has adopted more systems within one system to accommodate the needs of its clients. Both types of systems are moving closer to the other until the differences will virtually become indiscernible between the two softwares.
