Learn and develop a personal list on the most common medications used on the medical surgical unit I am working on, and learn their side effects. Making a list on medicines, their side effects and the ailments they cure shall provide me with better insight on what to suggest to a patient given a specific case. Relating to the symptoms presented by each patient, such list shall provide me a chance to understand better on what medical treatment or what medication would best fit the situation being resolved.
Appropriately and accurately perform a focused assessment on patients assigned based on the medical diagnosis to be able to examine what treatment and medical attention I can provide the patient with. This specifically concerns cases that involve immediate care.
To come up with comprehensive response list to particular cases commonly presented in my areas of expertise. This will provide me with the chance to immediately deduce the situation and provide diagnosis of the case in an accurate manner.
Provide detailed nursing documentation about my patient using the appropriate medical abbreviations; this could enhance the way I would document medical cases in a fast yet accurate manner. This way, the other nurses who would be assigned the following shift would know the most basic and important details about the patient’s case. Electronic codes are also important in this matter; utilizing them to make sure that the other staff would understand my report is highly important for the sake of the patient’s recovery progress.
Enhance and sharpen my clinical skills to perfection. (Inserting Foley, IV, IV push medications) This could be done through practice and constant involvement in firsthand experience that involve the operations mentioned.
Learn how to reduce my anxiety when a crisis occurs, and work efficiently under pressure through focusing on the case, the diagnosis of the patient’s situation and the need to save the life of the person involved.
To be able to adjust to the social differences of each patient and accurately address their needs without necessarily putting on insult or accidentally criticizing their race, tradition, culture and/or religious belief no matter how impractical I think it is. It is important to know the socio-cultural background of my patients before I give them patient education. Among these aspects include cultural bearing [whether they are Asian, African-American, Latino, White American, etc] and consider all the medical conditions that are related to their culture and race. Another aspect includes religion which may involve particular medical sanctions that may be applicable in dealing with such patients involving particular medical cases. Relatively, this information could be collected through looking through the initial documentation on the patients as they are admitted to the hospital.
Establish with my patients thru therapeutic communication; this could be done through constant checking on the status of the patient. The preceptor’s comments could help in establishing such connection with the patient. It should be noted though that dealing with such condition of patient-connection should not be invasive of the individual’s personal life; instead, it should focus on improving recovery procedures through psychological motivation.
Focus on mastering normal and abnormal lab values, which will allow myself to recognize signs/symptoms that my patients my show and from these information create inductive diagnosis that could help in furthering the process of medication or treatment that the patient needs.
