Closing Weed Store in My Community, Research Paper Example

Research Paper

The passage of Ballot Proposition D in 2013 mandated that no more than the 135 medical marijuana dispensaries operating in Los Angeles since September 2007 could remain open. Further, Measure D determined that landlords who rent to or otherwise provide retail space to illegal shops would be subject to fines and other sanctions. Since this initiative was passed, the enforcement of the new rules has been extremely lax, with numerous marijuana shops remaining open in defiance of the ban.

One such shop, (Insert Name of Shop Here), operates in my neighborhood, and its presence is causing significant issues for the residents in this community.  This shop did not open until 2011, so it is certainly operating illegally. It is also in violation of many other standards related to medical marijuana dispensaries. The proprietor employs convicted felons, allows gang activity and loitering, and remains open until 2am or later. It has become a magnet for prostitutes and drug dealers, and the foot traffic and automobile traffic in the area of the shop is both a blight on the neighborhood and a safety hazard for those of us who live nearby. There is no reason this shop should be allowed to remain open, and I would like to see the City Attorney’s office take immediate action to shut this place down.

In addition to sending this letter to (Name of City Attorney), I will be sending copies to my State Representative (Insert Name of Representative Here) as well as to the State Attorney’s office, Governor’s Office and the appropriate federal representatives. By allowing these illegal shops to remain open, their owners are making a mockery of the laws related to medical marijuana, and creating unpleasant and even dangerous conditions for those of us who have to tolerate the problems associated with them. Please take the appropriate action as swiftly as possible.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
