Co-op Program, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 555

Essay

As a college sophomore who came to the United States from another country as an exchange student, I have taken advantage of numerous opportunities that have availed themselves to me in order that I might prepare myself for a meaningful career. This application for a transfer to a co-op program is no exception. The co-op would allow me to continue my work as a mathematics major, with a concentration in actuarial science, while simultaneously learning on the job. The co-op pattern of study and work, in alternating seasons, would allow me to absorb my studies and to find real world applications for the things I am learning in college.

I hold specific reasons for choosing to study math and for working toward a job in the field of math. In high school, I excelled in literature, so for most of my time in high school I suppose I pictured myself going to college as an English major. Unlike most of my friends, though, I have always enjoyed math. As far back as grade school, I began to excel in math, making exemplary grades to the point of tutoring peers all the way through high school. As I approached the end of high school, knowing it was time for college, I embraced the notion of majoring in math, so I looked for schools that had excellent programs. A few years ago, the idea settled upon me that there are scores of actuary jobs in the business sector. Most people do not think about it, but entire industries are built upon factors of risk, such as the insurance industry. Other rewarding opportunities in this field are in the operations of state and federal governments and in private and public corporations. I have learned in school that being an actuary is consistently rated as one of the top five professions in America.

During my freshman year of college, I received A’s in Calculus II and in Business Statistics. I am proud of this, because I know how I applied myself to these classes, and I know that not every student fared as well in them as I did. Making the stellar grades in math as a freshman gave affirmation to my decision to work in the field of math. Solving problems brings me joy.

My request for admission into the co-op program in math is not one that I am making impulsively. I have thought about this for a few months now. As I see it, this move would be the best for me as I continue to become acclimated toward living in this great country. The time it will take to graduate would be extended, but the benefits that I could get from practicing mathematicians would far outweigh any inconvenience of taking longer to finish my undergraduate degree. Besides, if I prove myself worth on the job, there is the possibility that the company I would be working for would make me an offer to remain with it full time after I conclude my undergraduate studies.

Thank you for your careful consideration of this application. I look forward to the opportunity of speaking with you in person about this application. I have excellent references of professors and successful students who can attest to my work ethic and my resolve. Thank you for all you do for us here at the school.
