In addition to providing active patient care, nurses can help to advancethe nursing field by serving as leaders, mentors, or participating on committees within their place of employment. Leaders and mentors can use their experience to help other nurses develop theirskills in providing effective patient care.  Mentors and leaders can serve as inspiration and offer guidance to junior nurses or those who are struggling professionally. Nurses can take leadership roles and participate in committees to help ensure that policies and procedures are introduced and implemented, keeping the working environment efficient, productive, and safe. When experienced nurses take the responsibility of leadership and administrative roles, they help to improve the overall quality of professionals in the future of nursing.

Nurses in administrative and management positions can encourage high professional standards by providing a safe, organized, and ethical environment.  They can ensure that nursing staff is highly trained and qualified.  Nurses in administrative and management positions can eliminate safety hazards and unprofessional behavior whichcan distract nurses from their work and make it difficult to deliver quality patient care. Having certain materials available, such as hand sanitizer, and making sure that nursing departments are well-organizedfacilitates better patient care.  Nurse administrators and managers canalso promote a pleasant working environment by ensuring that nurses are being treated with respect from patients, other nurses, staff, and physicians. Leadership positions are yetanother way in which nurses can improve care for patients.
