“Stemming from the right to self determination each individual has the right to choose whether or not to participate in research.” The right information should be given to a patient or any other surrogate who is legally authorized which forms the basis for an informed decision. The participant must also clearly understand the information and be knowledgeable about discontinuing his or her participation without being penalized. The participant must also be given access to the necessary information that facilitate the achievement of adequate informed consent which engross the potential harms as well as associated benefits of participation, the nature of participation as well as any other alternatives if any aside from participation in research. Data protection is another important consideration that should be communicated to the participant.

“The nurse has the responsibility to implement and maintain stands of professional nursing practice. Nursing has a requirement for responsibility as well as accountability to ascertain that only people with sufficient skills, practice experience, commitment, integrity and knowledge relevant to the profession have the right of entry in to this profession. Implementation as well as maintenance of stands of professional nursing practice requires basic competencies that facilitate promotion of commitment to the professional practice before the individuals’ entry in the practice. It is the right of nurses to take part in the process of planning, establishment, implementation as well as evaluation of the review mechanisms that are intended at safeguarding the patients as well as the nurses.
