Colombian and Mexican Drug Organizations, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 329

Essay

Discuss what type of relationship exists between Colombian and Mexican drug organizations and clearly give 3 examples of they differ from one another.

Colombian authorities have on top of their agenda to investigate Barbie’s claims that Jose Jorge Balderas Garza, alias “JJ,” who is believed to be responsible for the attack on Paraguyan soccer player Salvador Cabañas in January, is hiding out in Colombia. JJ is also wanted by Interpol. This is supposed to be a drug related crime. There was a $2 million dollar reward on La Barbie’s head if captured.

Another anticipated drug related crime is, following the capo’s arrest on August 31, 2010, “Columbian authorities said eleven people were accused of shipping drugs from the FARC to La Barbie’s Beltran Leyva cartel. Among those detained was Julio Cesar Piña Soberanis, alias “Julio,” a Mexican believed to be La Barbie’s representative in Colombia”. (“Police Investigate Mexican Links to Columbian Cartel”).

Mexican drug cartels supply most of the meta-amphetamines where Columbian drug cartels supply most of the cocaine to the United States. Mexico is a large exporter of heroin where Columbia is not. Mexican gangs settled for payment in cash as far back as the 1980’s but Columbian gangs were up for payment in product arrangement. These are the differences in the two cartels.

Explain why these cartels present as much of a danger to the United States as traditional terrorist organizations.

The cartels attempt to use law enforcement against each other through bribes, through leaking intelligence to the government and or to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. These factors contribute to escalating violence which causes the country to lose its grip on the on the political power and the flow of narcotics through the country. There are higher forces that force bribery and exploitation which cause war amongst the politicians, police powers and the people. This cause anarchy.
