Combating Terrorism, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 254

Essay

A look at the U.S. government’s list of pre 9/11/01 (October 8, 1999) and post 9/11/01 (October 11, 2002) reveals several terrorist organizations. One in particular is RIRA (the Real Irish Republican Army) which has the stated purpose of uniting Ireland and forcing out British rule. RIRA operates out of northern Ireland. One of the favorite methods used by RIRA in espousing its aims is the use of car bombings and land mines (Fletcher, 2008).

One key anti-terrorism group is the United Nations. One of its committees, the Counter Terrorism Committee, is charged with working with member states to prevent terrorist acts around the world (Security Council, 2010). The United Nations attempts to dissuade terrorist acts through diplomacy. Some debate the point that combating terrorism is the work of the police, while others insist that it is the work of the military. I believe that terrorism must be fought by each organization that can put its resources to work to conquer it. There is no reason to exclude any group from working to eradicate terrorist blocks.

My beliefs about terrorism are that overly zealous people who harbor misguided and narrow agendas wage such acts. Terrorists work as cowards who do not fight fairly. The world must unite in its opposition to groups that seek to murder and destroy in the name of religion or ill-advised social policies.
