Combatting Corporate Deviance, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 301

Essay

Corporate crimes refer to crimes committed by corporations or individuals associated with a corporation. Corporate crimes have become popular in America from the latter part of 1960s. Combating corporate deviance can be done through a number of ways. One of the ways through which corporate deviance can be combated is through information symmetry. This is because most CEOs manage to commit financial crimes by feeding the public asymmetrical information. Making the many people privy to the true financial status of a company or corporation will ensure that the top people in corporation do not doctor information to swindle the public or shareholders (Gobert & Punch, 2003).

Another method of combating corporate deviance is by employing forensics auditing in the financial records of the company. Vetting of companies to ensure that they do not mix legal business activity, with an illegal activity is another way to combat corporate crime. Also, giving stricter penalties and prison terms for offenders will do much to combat corporate crime (Gobert & Punch, 2003).

Several things can be done to reduce incidences of corporate deviance. One of the things that can be done is increasing media surveillance of key corporations. This is because most offenders of the corporate caliber fear the media more than any other institution. The doctrine of corporate personhood should be repealed. This is because most corporations commit crimes and invoke the bill of rights; in most cases, they are successful. The law enforcement agencies should be more vigilant in watching all the main corporations in the country. In this era of technology, federal agencies like the IRS should use technology to make sure that corporate criminals do not succeed in conning the public and corporations (Thio, 2009).
