What enables Navistar to meet the communication needs of its separate business divisions? Discuss the communication process “within” and “across” Navistar. Discuss how communicating upward and downward are essential for organizational success. Why is important for business to have a crisis communication plan ready at all times?
Communications skills are crucial as it provides the critical link between the core functions of any business organization. Robert Kent, former dean of Harvard Business School said, “In business, communication is everything” (Blalock, 2006). Indeed, communication, if ineffective, is expensive for business. Navistar operates three units in its business and it meets the communication needs of these divisions by appointing a communication manager to lead each business division. These managers are responsible in understanding their division and merge the communication gap between top management and the lower level staff. Ineffective communication is an inevitable obstacle to business productivity but it can be avoided with the application of appropriate communication techniques. Fundamental is clarity in communicating facts and of what is important, in expressing thoughts, opinions, feelings and expectations and conveying the action wanted. Some channels of communication may not be effective in communicating a message across, especially over several business units. It must be kept in mind that communication across divisions should be formal and should be recalled accurately by the recipients. Examples of such communication strategies could include memos, e-mails, formal letters as well as the use of company bulletins. A crisis communication plan is particularly important as it prepares management to handle and act on a problem immediately as well as communicate its position with affected groups such as the staff and their families, the media, and the community at large.
What causes you the most conflict at work or school? What is your preferred conflict style and how comfortable are you with it?
I usually experience conflict due to certain incompatible goals and objectives. In managing conflicts, I tend to compromise with the other party involved. I usually try to talk things out and try to arrive at a common decision so that we are both satisfied in the end. Admittedly, this style could sometimes backfire, especially when the other party involved remains stubborn and would not agree on a compromise. At this point, this becomes a lose-lose situation and nothing is achieved. It is therefore important that the goals of all parties concerned are heard and the parties involved should deal with the conflict upfront. This is a win-win situation as both parties work together in order to achieve a mutually satisfying solution
Were the consequences of the conflict between Eric Molson and Ian Molson positive or negative? What ineffective techniques for managing conflict are evident in the case? What effective techniques for managing conflict are evident in the case?
The management of conflict between Eric and Ian Molson was largely negative although its resolution brought about some positive outcomes as it successfully brought about the merger of Molson and Coors. An example of ineffective management of conflict is the style adopted by the cousins in dealing with their situation. They strove to compete with each other, steadfastly clinging to their own opinions and disregard each other’s position. Due to this, the board of directors has shown no inclination to get involved and let the cousins continue their conflict. The only effective technique shown in this case is that they were able to direct their divisions in upholding the company standards and maintaining their place in the market.
