Communication Consortium, Essay Example

Essay

The topic I plan to write on for this health policy op-ed is the impact that the Affordable Care Act has had on families and on individuals. Overall, it appears that the program allows large families to gain affordable care, while it prevents individuals from being able to successfully acquire affordable health insurance that would confer them benefit (HHS, n.d.). The best mode of publication for this opinion article would be in USA Today, because this is a news story that is relevant to the broader American population. Since many individuals and families describe to the both the physical newspaper and its online publications, it is likely that many people from the target audience will find this report.

USA Today accepts opinion submissions online to “The Forum”, which is dedicated to opinion articles (Communications Consortium, n.d.). While some opinion articles are also published in the physical copy of the periodical, the publishers are more selective about this process. Submissions generally run between 650 and 750 words and individuals who are interested in submitting their own articles should maintain these guidelines. The periodical prefers to publish opinion articles that are related to top news stories, which indicates that this publication method would be a good fit for my idea. As an individual who has a lot of experience and knowledge with regards to public health policy, I will also be able to satisfy their requirement for approaching a known topic with a new perspective. Since op-eds that deal directly with legislation will not be accepted, I will talk about this issue without mentioning the specific Act, and instead have a discussion on the current state of health care affordability. Finally, to submit the article, I will be able to forward it to [email protected] and include it as an in-text document rather than an attachment to ensure that it will be considered for publication.
