A major communication gap exists between parents, teachers and students. The main reason for the existence of this gap is the differences in opinions, interests, and age gap. For example, students and parents are often not on speaking terms concerning education matters. Having come from different generations, their interests also vary quite a lot. Teachers may also fail to communicate effectively with parents and students. This may be so because they chose to stick to their teaching curriculum and do not think about the fact that times are changing, and this curriculum should change with them.
This problem needs to be addressed immediately. Communication is a very vital part of human life. Parents need to communicate with teachers as well as their children. They need to be able to understand the needs of their children so as to come up with the best means meeting them. Teachers too, need to communicate effectively with students (Senge, 12). They are the ones with the important responsibility of imparting knowledge to students. If they fail on their part, they will produce half-baked students.
The first workable solution towards the management of the existing communication gap is to be cognizant of one another’s languages. As was stated before, times are transmuting steadfastly. As a result, two people may seem to be speaking the same language, however, fail to fathom each other. The English language, for instance, has several forms in the current world. Once all parties can understand that there are differences in languages, they will strive to fathom each other. They would have to identify words that are different and the appropriate way of replacing these words.
Open mindedness is another method through which the communication gap can be closed. Once each of the parties is aware of the fact that they are different in many ways, they should try to find how they can accept one another. No single party should feel that they are the ones that are correct and that their way is the right way. For example, teachers are the ones that are most likely to have this opinion. They may think that since they are dealing with laid out curricula, people should follow in their footsteps. It is that kind of hardline stand that make students rebellious and unable to come to an amicable understanding with their teachers.
Each of the solutions as mentioned earlier has their disadvantages and advantages. The first one is that there is bound to be a lot of rejection and hostility. As said earlier, there is a high likelihood that each of these parties will have the feeling that they are the ones who are right. Another disadvantage of the first one is that it is almost impossible to keep up with the changes in languages. English has taken many forms these days, especially among the younger generations, who are mostly students. Parents and teachers may not have the capacity to handle the changes.
Although it has setbacks, the first solution is the one that is mostly likely going to solve this problem. When people come to an understanding about their differences, they become more tolerant towards one another. It creates a spirit of learning and growth in each of them thus fostering not only better communication but also good relationships (Marshall, 33).
