Effective Interpersonal Communication

Communication runs every aspect of life. According to Sellnow and Seeger (2021), communication is the exchange of meaning between two or more individuals through a communication channel. In every institution, communication is essential in solving in giving instructions and conflicts. Misunderstandings occur regularly at work or home, sometimes leading to conflict, but solutions can be found through effective communication. According to Wallenstein (2018), conflict is a disagreement between two or more parties.  This paper explains the employee-to-employee relationship where various events occur, and effective communication is vital to ensure coexistence.

My coexistence with my supervisor has experienced some challenges that have interfered with our relationship and communication. One of our biggest challenges has been the inconsideration of each other’s communication strengths and weaknesses when exchanging information. Most of our conversations have needed further explanation, causing a disagreement because my boss occasionally thinks I take too long to understand simple concepts.

I work as a messenger pharmaceutical even though I have no medical background. My job is to get instructions and deliver drugs to the customers in pre-sealed boxes. Most professionals in our company use technical, medical terms that I do not grasp unless I Google search. Additionally, I prefer verbal communication because my supervisor’s handwriting is challenging to comprehend and make a sentence.

The company’s communication channel is email, and it has been the company’s strength because we embrace positive criticism and understand each other. Still, my boss prefers handwritten notes because it saves him time.

I prefer face-to-face communication with him because it gives me more information and easy to understand. I can present issues in the most straightforward language possible verbally. I consider it my strength. Through our conversations with my boss, my skills have developed even in communicating with others. Additionally,  I have non-verbal communication experience to enhance my audience’s understanding of my messages (Flanagin, 2017). Audience analysis is critical in interpersonal and intergroup communications; I always ensure I accommodate all my audiences irrespective of their background.

Commending people and showing gratitude boosts people’s morale to do better, and offering positive criticism is vital to ensure there is no misunderstanding. I have noted that admitting mistakes and saying sorry improves communication between my boss and me or colleagues. I have used this skill regularly.

My text communication with my boss has been challenging due to misunderstandings and misinterpretations. My boss uses this form of communication, and it is his strength; I find it challenging, and it has regularly strained our relationship. To improve our relationship, I have started reading some of his notes and basic medical books to enhance our communication.

It is important to note that every person has communication weaknesses and strengths. Some prefer written while others prefer verbal communication. Reconciliation may be challenging when body language is applied but finding common ground is helpful. Today, my boss uses spoken and written communication to understand instructions better and improve our work relationship. Inadequate communication mechanism makes relations challenges, and silence makes the working environment toxic (Flanagin, 2017). It is, therefore, vital for both parties to find common ground to ensure the relationship stands.

In conclusion, every political, social, and economic setup needs communication to progress because it allows people to exchange ideas, learn and express opinions. Therefore, people should learn and polish their verbal and written communications to ensure every audience is accommodated and the message is correctly interpreted. A person must learn to adjust to the other in case of a communication conflict.
