Introduction

A student leader can be defined as a person who guides others towards a common goal, showing the way by example, and creating a conducive environment in which other students feel actively involved in the whole process (Wilson, 2001). A student leader should be committed to carry out the mission of the school and not the boss who sits in the office to command. Thus Leadership is the ability of an individual of getting others to willingly follow (Wilson 2001). For the student leader to be able to create a community sense in the school the following should prevail.

Formulate a vision: student leader must formulate vision which demonstrates clearly and vividly the picture of where to go as well as a distinct understanding of what successes is and how to achieve it. The student leader must be able to communicate the vision in a manner that the whole student community will buy into it (Wilson, 2001). Further, the student leader must be disciplined to work towards the vision single mindedly and focus actions towards achieving a community sense.

The student leader must create an atmosphere of trust in the school. This is achieved by the leader demonstrating integrity. Integrity requires the student to make deals which are honest, show predictable reactions, reveal well-controlled emotions, and avoid tantrums and harsh outbursts. By so doing, the student leader will be more approachable by the students and hence make decisions together as a community. This value I learnt it while being the president of the Spanish club. More, the student leader must be dedicated in spending enough time and energy to ensure that tasks at hand are completed and must also inspire dedication to all the students through example by doing what it takes to achieve community feeling in the school. Additionally the student leader should create good human relations in the school thus providing an environment in which all students and the entire school fraternity feel welcome, respected and valued. This relation will make students exercise their power well and maintain group membership and energy (Wilson, 2001).

The student leader should take personal responsibility for failures and should give credit for any success. This reverse magnanimity will help other students feel good and draw them closer together. Furthermore the student leader must demonstrate humility and try to elevate everyone. While being humble, the student leader should be open and listen to other students’ views and judgments and accept new ways of doing thing than some one else thought of. Lastly, a student leader must be creative to be able to explore new ideas and lead the whole school towards achieving the goal of a community feeling. Among other things a student leader must do is to be fair, assertive and autonomous.
