Community Health, Thesis Paper Example

Thesis Paper

Bioterrorism is where a group of terrorist attacks a certain country using biological pathogens that can kill people within a few hours if care is not given. Bioterrorism is also the cause of many deaths because at first, people do not realize that they have been attacked and they think that it is just a disorder that they have. When people have this mentality, the spread of the pathogens becomes rampant and sometimes containing the diseases can be very difficult. Nurses have been taught how to handle disasters and how to help the community cope with the results of the disaster after it has ended.

The Major Roles of Health Personnel

The major role of the public health personnel that is often involved in disaster management is to know the type of pathogen in case of bioterrorism. The health personnel should know the number of people it has affected and if the disease is contagious. The health personnel should be able to find ways of treating the disease in a quick manner and how to protect other citizens who have not been infected. The health personnel have the role of advising the citizens on the occurrence of a disaster and teaching the civilians on the ways they can protect themselves. A public health care nurse will record the number of people with the disease and how fast it is spreading. The nurse will also be involved in treating the patients and taking care of them while they are still in the hospital. The nurse will isolate patients who have contagious diseases while informing the other citizens on the dangers of the disease outbreak.

Chain of Command Used in Simulation

The chain of command used in simulation is where the local nurse receives patients from the community and he tries to see if the disease is contagious. The nurse then checks for the number of people who are taken into the ER as a result of the disease outbreak. The nurse then informs his superiors who then contact the FBI, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Pharmaceutical companies, National Institutes of Health, the American Red Cross and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These agencies will take care when providing the cures, taking care of the disaster by finding the patients all over the nation in the case of Red Cross and also providing care for the patients affected.

Available Resources in Case of a Bioterrorism Disaster

The resources that are available for the health nurse are technology that is advanced so as to know how a pathogen attacks the body of a person. The other resources are the antibiotics that are found in the hospital for cases of bioterrorism. The nurse can use ways of controlling the disease from spreading to the rest of the citizens who have not been infected. Health nurses use airplanes to transfer patients from their homes to health facilities that can contain, treat and also prevent further spread of the disease. The health nurse is often required to take preventive measures in case of bioterrorism or take damage control when the pathogens have already been released to the atmosphere. A health nurse is supposed to assure the patients that the disease will be treated and the patients will be released soon. The nurse has to give their patients emotional support so that the patients will have confidence in themselves and also the treatment they receive. The nurses should try to find out if the pathogens mutate and the effects they have on the patients.

Agencies, Institution and Organizations That Are Contacted in Disaster Cases

The FBI should be contacted so that they find the terrorists and stop the spread of the disease. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) should be contacted because they do a lot of research and they are well equipped for disaster cases. This agency helps to know the type of pathogens used in the bioterrorism attack and if it can mutate and the available cures. Pharmaceutical companies should also be contacted because they help in providing the drugs needed to health facilities and they can also give patients prescribed drugs. National Institutes of Health helps in research work in cases of the pathogens, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds the vaccine needed for disease prevention and also the cure for the disease outbreak, and last but not least, the American Red Cross helps when there is a disaster by finding where the patients are and transferring them to health facilities using choppers or ambulances. The Red Cross has been taught on the proper ways to handle people who have been infected with a certain pathogen without spreading to other people or endangering their own lives.

Actions Taken to Help Community Deal With the Aftermath of Bioterrorism

The health nurse should assure the community after a bioterrorism attack that the diseases caused are under control and the people do not have to be worried about their health. The nurse needs to take people for community therapy where those infected and also affected are counseled to help them deal with the stressful situations that occurred. The health nurse is also supposed to advise the community on preventive measures and also to be prepared in case there occurs another attack. The health nurse however should assure people that the FBI has the security checked and the people are safe from bioterrorism attacks in future. The health nurse should also assure people that the pathogens that can be used for bioterrorism have all been researched and preventive measures have been taken.

Preparedness in Case of Larger Disasters

In case of a larger disaster such as the Hurricane Katrina, nursing personnel have to have medicines for diseases that may arise due to the disaster, the nurses need to have knowledge on how to treat emotional trauma as a result of the disaster.  The nurses need to use choppers so as to transfer patients from the disaster hit areas to the health facilities for advanced treatment. The nurses need to have the skills that can help in containing the disaster for example in case of a wide spread bioterrorism, the nurses need to contain the disease fast enough so that the people can be protected against the constant mutation of the pathogens as they spread from one person to another.

The health personnel have been taught over the years on the ways they can prevent or contain national disaster and still help people cope with the aftermath of a disaster. The nurses are very important people in the community in the sense that they assist in transferring patients from disaster areas to health facilities and they are also found in the Emergency Rooms where they help treat the patients. Nurses have been known to work all day and night in case of disaster because they have dedicated their lives to saving people and also helping those people who are in remote areas get sufficient treatment. Nurses also help patients who travel by air get to their destinations under proper supervision and also care.
