The expectations that novels would be the same is book is an unrealistic because the written format will always be different from the movie. The novel is a long narrative which that tells a story about fictional characters and events that are in sequentially in order from start to the end. In contrast, a movie is an adaptation of a novel that may tell the story for entertainment purposes which may change the novel to make the movie more exciting. The novel is a collection of ideas that have been written or typed by an author that is detailed enough to examine every character thoroughly. In contrast, the movie will have a leading character that is well-known and traditionally one other supporting actor. The movie does not have the time to commit to developing several characters in a two hours. The novel is the thoughts of the author about a specific event along with bringing the reader into the story. There are many differences between the movie and the novel however they both represent a form of art expression. The movies are the visual story while the novel is the written story but they both provide an emotional response.
The person can follow the experience mentally putting themselves into the story versus the movie does not allow the person to totally connect to the character because the novel is reading mentally and the movie is a visual stimulation. Another contrast is the amount of money it takes to do a novel which is less expensive as the movie. The entire process from getting the book written and packaged plus advances for the writer could be $100,000 but a movie could be $100 million to produced and deliver the movie to the public. The novel has been known to take as long as 10 to 15 years to write by some writers however, the movie today can take as little as 12 months to complete. There is no doubt that traditionally people that read books often share that the novel was always better than the movie. In addition, the movie often changes some of the facts of the movie to ensure that the movie is more exciting and never boring to the movie enthusiasts. The movie has to take liberties because they cannot always capture the emotional content or direction of a novel. The novel has the luxury to spread the story over 150 pages versus the movie will try to shrink the same story into 1 or 2 hours.
Comparison
The comparison of the novel and the movie is similar that they both tell sequential stories that build on the plot until the end final has the climatic ending. The novel and movies both build the characters into either a villain or the good guy to help the reader of movie enthusiasts identify with the characters. The novel and movies are similar because they both allow people to escape reality and live in the world of fantasy and fiction. People spend there lives spent on working, raising chiildren, stressing on the job and trying to find a moment of peace in their lives. The movie and the novel provide an individual a chance to close out the world and live in the fictional world.
It so difficult to talk about the differences of novels and movies because they are so similar types of art. The movies and the novel are both great work of art that touch on human emotion. The novel and the movie both are channels for people to escape their reality while being apart of a story as a spectator. The novel and movies both play a part in society that is sometimes an reflection of our humanity or lack of it. The book and the movies are used sometimes to make comments about the world we live and today or to examined how we lived
in the past. The humanitarian to the worst in people can be displayed in the novel and the movie which both invite the reader and the movie goer to join in the story.
Cause and Effect
The novel and the movie both utilize cause and effect such as the author using it in the writing to challenge the reader to analyze the character along with the storyteller. The simple cause and effect in written form would be engaging the reader with some fictional event that draws the reader into the story. There many movies that can best explain how the cause and effect is utilized such as the movie Harry Potter that shows the stream of light from his wand. The flashing light that finally showed the power of Harry Potter as cause and effect. The movies definitely have the advantage in changing the story from the novel because their goal is not to follow the novel accurately but to entertain the audience. The novel can provide the cause and effect in written form how it takes longer to develop that cause and effect over many pages instead of the movie taking a few seconds for cause and effect.
