History of interdisciplinary collaboration in nursing
According to Finkelman and Kenner (2012) the history of interdisciplinary collaboration emerged from work in interprofessional teams. It encompasses team work; conflict resolution; change; delegation; coordination; collaboration and communication. Essentially, these form the basic competencies a nursing professional must develop to function within the interprofessional team (Finkelman & Kenner, 2012). This is a new terminology that emerged in the 20th century.
Interdisciplinary collaboration today in nursing
However, arguments have been that health care professionals are educated in isolation so it has evolved as the foundation for translating evidence into practice. As such, each healthcare professional is expected to develop the Institute of Medicine (IOM) core competencies in facilitating interprofessional team building and functioning. The institute has posited that there is great need for change because the care delivered is way below the care patients ought to receive (Finkelman & Kenner, 2012).
Interdisciplinary collaboration in Florence Nightingale’s work
Historians have linked Florence Nightingale’s interdisciplinary collaboration work to the contributions she made in nursing as a hospital based as well as community practitioner. Arguments are that she compromised nursing in order to raise its standards towards adapting an interdisciplinary collaborative approach, which was the ultimate outcome. Precise contributions highlighted in her roles as community healthcare worker, social worker and environmentalist. Theories she applied to these interventions were fresh-air policies, nutrition, statistics (data analysis) and nursing education. These concepts have converged into the sophisticated interdisciplinary theories used today ( Florence Nightingale Notes on Nursing, 2012)
