Translational research at the DNP level is a clear indicator of the needs and expectations of an ever-changing practice environment that supports this process as part of a growing need for change and evolution in the nursing profession (Dreher & Glasgow, 2011). DNP-educated nurses must be able to reflect upon the needs of their patients and to demonstrate a masterful knowledge base of advanced practice issues that influence quality of care that is based upon translational research evidence (Dreher & Glasgow, 2011). From a project-based perspective, the chronic care model and its influence on HIV/AIDS reflects the importance of establishing a framework that will embrace research and translate it into practice objectives that will impact this population and the care that they receive.

Translational research may fall under a number of principles set forth by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2006), but the most relevant principle is “III: Clinical Scholarship and Analytical Methods for Evidence-Based Practice” (p. 11). This reflects the importance of understanding how evidence that is generated will be applied to the practice setting and to improving policies and education moving forward (Hammick, Dornan, & Steinert, 2010).  In addition, expanding heath literacy to the chronic care model for the chosen patient population requires expert knowledge and the ability to improve the outcomes of this vulnerable population group and to provide reassurance that although the disease is chronic, it may be managed effectively. This will engage DNP-prepared nurses in evaluating evidence to transform the practice environment and to expand advanced practice objectives in a cost efficient manner. There must be a greater focus on emphasizing the critical areas of need that will have a direct impact on the HIV/AIDS patient population through the objectives set forth by advanced practice nursing and to support a chronic care model that will ultimately improve their quality of life and their ability to manage the disease effectively without limitations.
