Introduction

The systematic review in the COPD assignment offered an important learning curve in learning to perform this type of assessment at a high level to better understand COPD and its relationship to the Chronic Care Model. The grant application represents a high level of skill and knowledge of the subject matter and experience with the topic in question (Polit and Beck, 2012). The systematic review completed for this assignment represents a less experienced approach and will improve with time when future studies are completed.

Body

The knowledge base of a researcher must continue to expand in order to have an impact on outcomes; therefore, systematic reviews support this growth and maturity to encompass new perspectives and acquire new forms of evidence (Nannini & Houde, 2010). The systematic review must be comprised of information that will likely have a lasting impact on clinical practice methods (Mulnard, 2011), and must also aim towards having the appropriate methodology to conduct the systematic review with the desired level of success (Smith, Devane, Begley, & Clark, 2011).

Our team’s systematic review emphasizes the creation of a research question, along with a database search that identified studies that were both published and unpublished, identified data and populated it from a database, developed an analysis of the data and interpreted the results, and developed a written report, similar to the method provided in the grant application sample.

Conclusion

A successful systematic review requires cohesiveness and clarity regarding the subject area in order to identify studies that will have a lasting impact on clinical practice. Therefore, this requires a clear and concise approach to the systematic review method that is grounded in an understanding of what the method is designed to accomplish. This will encourage knowledge development that will positively impact the researcher’s level of experience and the overall ability to identify weaknesses in the research process that may transform into key strengths in future studies.
