Consistent Use of Marijuana Changes Personality, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 311

Essay

Do you believe consistent use of marijuana changes personality? If so, how?

I certainly do not believe that consistent use of marijuana changes personality. This assumption is made from two perspectives. First there are countries such as Holland where marijuana use is legal and teenagers along with adults alike can buy and use the drug without restriction. So far there have been no adverse effects among persons using this drug in Holland pertaining to their personality. Importantly, when compared to United States and Canada the crime index rate in Holland is far comparatively lower than these two countries  (Get the Facts, 2014).

Second, while studies have been conducted providing evidence that marijuana use is harmful to the brain there have been no longitudinal controlled trials supporting the assumptions that marijuana causes temporary loss in memory and personality disorders. These accusations are not supportive by strong studies comparing other populations to distinctly confirm that it is marijuana use exclusively causing personality disorders among persons in the society.

Stress creates personality disturbances manifesting primarily as depression. Someone may turn to marijuana consumption due to their inability coping with the pressures of daily living. When a personality disorder is diagnosed in someone using marijuana, the first blame goes to the drug because it is illegal despite the medicinal properties disregarded by Food and Drug Administration. No other supporting factors are taken into consideration because another person needs to be enrolled in a drug program or taken off the streets.

In my opinion, there is a blame game being played between marijuana and the social structure, which fails to adequately provide for citizens who take to drugs as a remedy for their frustration. Remove access to marijuana and there will still be the same amount of personality disorders within our society.
