Construction of Gender, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 334

Essay

There are several constructions of gender according to studies. Indeed, different communities view the concept of gender differently in that it depends on individual perception rather than an embedded notion. The construction of gender is changing as each day passes by because of the increase in educational levels in several communities. In this respect, this paper tries to analyse the social and hegemonic construction of gender.

In truth, there are many definitions of gender including the embedded notion that gender is the biological sex. For instance, if one is born with female sexual organs, her gender is automatically female and vice versa. However, the existence of individuals with both sexual organs and those with different emotions from their sexual organs changed the perception and the definition of gender. There are perhaps two definitions of the construction of gender. This includes the social and the hegemonic construction of gender. Hegemonic construction of gender gives men the authority over women because of their physical strength. In truth, hegemonic masculinity is socially constructed since the notion only exists in the minds of the people in the society. Social construction of gender is a broad topic that encompasses the hegemonic construction of gender. This is because the communities create all these perceptions. Although hegemonic construction of gender may be true to some extent, it is not proven. Moreover, the existence of instances where the female gender is more powerful than the female gender disputes this supposition.

As explained above, the community informs the decisions and the perceptions about gender. This means that the parents are very vital in the comprehension of gender moulds. This is to imply that my parents were responsible for the way I thought about gender especially when I was young. However, this changed as I grew up because of the access to information about gender other than that provided by my parents. This means that the construction of gender is informed by the amount and the quality of the information presented to the individual in question.
