Analysis of ethical and legal implications of selected article in relation to ANA 2001 Code of Ethics for Nurses

ANA 2001 code of ethics was designed as guidelines for nurses within this geographic location to function within their legitimate roles and responsibilities. This was expected to be consistent with a high quality of nursing care as well as ethical obligations contained in the particular scope of practice.  Further, it is specified that the nurse an ethical obligation to practice with compassion, self-respect, respect for pateints and professional dignity. Essentially, the nurse’s first responsibility is to the patent becoming an justice advocate in cases of ethical dilemmas. Therefore, a nurse must uphold integrity for self and pateints under his/her care. Ultimately, in keeping up with current trends professional development must be a major principle of ethical practice (American Nurses Association, 2014).

In comparison the code of ethics with interpretive statements outlines the same nine (9) provisions as embodied in the ANA 2001code. However, they have additional details explaining each code pertaining to the specific ethical principle required for execution of that provision. For example, provision 7 speaks of professional development. The revised code explains that it means advancing the profession through knowledge acquisition and dissemination within the science. Also, it means advancing the profession through maintaining and implementing professional standards (Doc Sharing Article wk. 3, 2014).

Cherry and Jacob (2014) contend that current trends emerging within the nursing science pertaining to nurses’ professional development along with improvement in quality of patient care make it imperative for ethical principles adherence at every level of nursing care delivery (Cherry & Jacob, 2014)
