Controversial Problem on College Campuses, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 297

Essay

Attending college is one of the most exciting times in a student’s life. For many graduating seniors this is the very first time that they start to think of themselves as entering adulthood. After all, they are away from home and all the rules that parents strictly enforced are now forgotten memories. Even though these students have become adults in many ways, they often forget that they are still minors in the eyes of the law.

For many of these students, partying is a main component of college life. College campuses thrive with nightly house parties, sorority and fraternity parties, after game parties, and dormitory parties. These parties are where many students are exposed to beer and liquor for the first time in their lives. The total and overwhelming sense of freedom, along with peer pressure and a search for acceptance, can sometimes causes many students to make negative decisions. In fact, underage drinking of those decisions.

One of the main reasons underage drinking is such a problem on college campuses is because the massive number of students can’t be completely monitored by the limited number of officers in the campus police department. Trying to watch every party and every underage student is a battle the campus police will never win. Secondly, alcohol is too readily available on college campuses. Older students purchase kegs of beer and provide younger students with alcohol. Thirdly, underage drinking is such a controversial problem because colleges have simply conceded that it will happen and there is nothing they can do about it. Many colleges lack funding for alcohol education programs and also, they refuse to ban alcohol from campuses because it might have a negative impact on the number of students attending.

Students must remember what they learned from parents and make positive decisions.
