Corruptions Within the Police Force, Essay Example

Corrections officers would be motivated to engage in corruption if they feel their superior supervisors are very lenient or are very encouraging of corrupt practices (Braswell, Mc Carthy & Mc Carthy 317).Head corrections officers would definitely encourage corruptive activities among their subordinate corrections officers if the head officers are also getting considerable amounts of kickback money from the subordinate officers’ corruptive activities (Braswell, Mc Carthy & Mc Carthy 317). Usually, subordinate officers oblige to engage head officers in corruptive activities if they feel it is the only way they can more easily not get caught by the top head of the corrections force (Braswell, Mc Carthy & Mc Carthy 317). Another factor which motivates corrections officers to engage in corruptive activities is when they feel the urge to take revenge against the entire corrections force. They feel one of the most hurtful ways to take revenge is through being corruptive, as corruption is not only unlawful, but also very unethical in the eyes of the society.

I agree some forms of corruptions are worse than others if they are done continuously and are not hindered by corresponding authorities. For instance, continued corruptive activities in a country tremendously affect economic growth as the funds within the nation are not used appropriately (Pak 1).  When corruptive activities proliferate in a country, government officials do not turn in the funds they receive from the public transactions to the government departments they work for. Instead, they keep these funds to themselves for personal use. Therefore when this happens, taxes and other government revenue funds are not received by the government agencies. Lord Acton believes that democracy lessens corruption when he made this statement: “”power tends to corrupt and absolute power, to corrupt absolutely,” (Werlin 1). When there is democracy, people are more inclined to obey the laws as they do not feel revengeful towards their governments. They feel this way as in a democratic government, government officials more often than not “follow the due process of law in providing benefits for their citizens” (Werlin 1).
