Cosmetology Training, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 299

Essay

While many individuals believe that cosmetology studies only focus on the art of beauty, they fail to recognize the skills that are necessary for becoming successful in this trade. Ultimately, cosmetology training is equivalent to college level learning due to the many skills acquired throughout this education process. To be a successful cosmetologist, it is essential to learn mathematics, chemistry, human anatomy and physiology, and business management. Furthermore, to become certified by the State Board, it is imperative that cosmetologists prove they are knowledgeable of and will uphold hygiene, safety, and sanitation, as well as State Board of cosmetologists’ rules and regulations.

Before fully understanding what is required of a cosmetologist during training, it is easy to assume that a cosmetologist education is not equivalent to that of an individual who has completed a college program. However, there are many overlapping topics of study and in some cases, a cosmetologist has more rigorous training that a college student. For example, the average college student would not take anatomy unless it was required of them as a biology major; therefore, cosmetology students have a greater understanding of basic biology than the average person.

The average college student spends approximately 1,500 hours in the classroom over their four years of training, which is the same amount of time that cosmetologists spend studying their trade. Aside from simple classroom learning, cosmetologists also engage in clinical experience, related mentored work-based learning experience, and are required to complete a senior capstone project.Upon successful completion of the program, the students are required to take the Maryland State Board of Cosmetologists’ Examination, which verifies their understanding of their training and hands on experiences. This is similar to college examinations to verify learning. Therefore, the experience in training as a college student and training as a cosmetologist are equivalent.
