Community building practices
Kouzes and Posner (2007) state that in order to overcome the leadership challenges it is necessary to follow some principles, which are essential to any leader’s success. The first practice of effective leadership is to model the way or act in a manner they expect others to act. They provide that the credibility of leaders translate to the leadership practices. The behavior of the leaders based on the principles and use responses to improve how others think of them. Another practice set out by Kouzes and Posner (2007) is that of a shared vision, which provides that the vision of an exemplary leader shared with everyone around the leader. The leaders should share their visions and communicate a positive attitude towards the visions of the rest.
An exemplary leader challenges the process and explores ways of innovation and improvement of the current state of affairs. The process considered as a process of learning through mistakes and taking risks to enhance and progress. The practice involves the taking up of initiatives and encouraging others to follow along. An exemplary leader also allows others to act and relies on the effort of the team. The leader fosters collaboration and builds trust with others to enable others succeed. The final principle according to Kouzes and Posner (2007) is the practice of encouraging the heart. The recognition of individual accomplishments and the team and organizational contributions lifts the spirit of the people and motivate the development towards success. Encouragement is an essential factor in the motivation of others and the driving force of progression.
Sense of community
Cultural influence fosters community building as the community must possess a feeling that their opinion has an influence in the progression of a community. The influence of an individual relies upon the consideration and acknowledgement of the contributions of other individuals. A sense of community established where individuals could make contributions that affect the community. The sense of influence is the base of community building among the citizens of most European countries. The influence in this case demonstrated by participation in the electoral process where the individual’s contribution influences the outcome of the vote Jason (1997).
The development of a shared emotional connection also creates a sense of community among this culture. Shared emotional connections established in the interaction of individuals in public places. The availability of public areas where people can socialize and interact enables the creation of a sense of community individuals in these areas. The social interaction of people enhances community building. According to block (2009) the sense of belonging also plays an essential role in the building of a sense of community. For people to have a sense of community the factor of belonging plays a pivotal role as people associate emotional security, personal investment, and identify with their community.
The reward of individual’s trough their contribution in the community is essential in the establishment in the sense of community. Individuals pulled into the community for different reasons, but each has goals and the integration and accomplishment of these goals develop the sense of community among these individuals. The reliance on other members of the community creates a sense of contribution and obligation, which is the essence of a community.
