Introduction
This research paper shall address on critical thinking model which is used in support of homeland security. This model is being supported by historical event of terrorism which has been of interest of United States and domestic security and their international interest. Critical thinking is meant to focus on essential elements that ask the right questions to enable one to uncover fallacies in statistical misrepresentations and reasoning. Use of critical thinking in homeland security enables interpretation of real world information.
Event Tree Models on Terrorism
Since the terrorist attack against United States in September 11, 2001 the local law enforcement agencies expanded their roles in home land security. This role is based on event tree models on terrorism decisions, these decisions are based on frequency of possible attacks and how they would be mitigated. Adoption of the model brought changes on how homeland security was being executed and all stakeholders have been involved from the military, local government and federal government to control the threat.
The model involves assessment of any threat to the community, provision of intelligence, enforcement of immigration laws training of all stakeholders on how they would be able to detect any instances which would lead to security breach. Detection of likely attacks is meant to protect infrastructures such as dams, harbors, utilities and airports to ensure they are safe.
The event tree model is a proved model to solve risks by analyzing them whether they are man made hazards and natural. The department of Homeland Security has been sponsoring the model with an aim of preventing terrorism and reduces chances of vulnerability to improve recovery and response. Its main objective is to support National homeland security (Parnell, 2008).
Although the model is complex it utilizes the best existing models available and requires a lot of period to be able to predict the frequency of attacks with each of the agents. The methodology used would as well increase complexity of data requirements and distribution probabilities distribution for each of the branch of the event tree used to solve the complexity of the scenario being done.
Prevention of Terrorism
Terrorism has been the main United States threat to Homeland security and its international establishments. The threat has been there for long but the attack on September 11 2001 was the wakeup call of its security agencies on how serous the threat would be. The security agencies being spearheaded by federal government formulated security models whose intention is to disband the operations of terrorist and prevent occurrence of attack of such magnitude.
Terrorist have been changing their operational tactics and use of technology which has made it more difficult for the intelligence to be able to disband their operations. Hence, implementation of critical thinking model is meant to unearth the operations of terrorists which are intricate. Its focus is on international security of Americans who are abroad, the investments which the Americans have done overseas and domestic security issues. The strategic plan adopted for security is also meant to improve on international relations, evaluate the performance of projects implemented and use it for functions which suits both international and domestic perspectives (Linda, 2009). It is believed to be the best model because its has an overhaul approach to terrorism it does not only concentrate with inland threats pose by terrorism but also on the international interest of the country investment locally and abroad.
Homeland Security Policies
The model had policies which were formulated by different security agencies. Implementation of the policies changed how every security agency had perceived terrorism threat and heightened the efforts of minimizing such threats. The policies had effect on social aspect of the citizen of the country and how they relate with the countries which are believed to be supporting terrorists. The political affiliation and operations on decision which relate to international relations and trading and aid by the United States country differs.
With the influence of social and political operations of the country has also affected the economical wellbeing of the country especially when deciding on the sites which they want to establish foreign offices of investments overseas. They need to carry out an evaluation of possibilities of terrorist attack and if the country feels that the investment would attract more threat it would be haunted despite of how profitable to would have turned to be.
The intelligence capability and operations have been boosted to be able to carry on with their duties of investigation, evaluation of situations, planning and administration. Use of critical thinking by all stake holders is essential as it provides an environment which is viable for sound leadership which is geared to success of the mission to stop any further terrorist advances. The leadership supported by critical thinking is much successful in its support of homeland security venture.
Good leadership is what has contributed to the breakthrough of fight against terrorism in United States to be evidence. According to Barbara Et al. (2005) the programs which have been implemented especially in the military have really revolutionized operations of the military. Although the military personnel are the same people they operations from September 11, 2001 changed. The factors which made them to change was adaption of new security environment, increase of rogue countries, increase of terrorist threats which has made the operations much more difficult to operate and to be able to integrate new technology in their operations.
For them to fulfill the factors they formulated different policies which changed their operations. Attack of terrorism of that magnitude changed the security environment which called for a heightened military involvement to control the situation. The change of the security environment affects homeland security and international security as well therefore the inland military and those on overseas missions were involved in the operations (Gordon & Bellavita, 2006). There was also need to improve on their technological skills and use of military equipments and weapons which are of the latest technology to be able to be on control of the terrorist. Before then terrorist were about to outdo United States technology used in military and intelligence as for them to be able to compromise United States security they must be using sophisticated technology. Lastly is due to increased instances of terrorist attack and increment of rogue countries which are working to compromise the security of United States.
Conclusions
Although implementation of the model has improved on homeland security against terrorist cases of threats to United States keeps on being reported often with the most recent being the Nigerian who was about to explode United States airplane from Delta airline but he was not successful. Therefore, there is need to continually improve on the policies and security measures which are in place to ensure that they are upgraded to meet the changing tactics of terrorists. With such evaluation and upgrade they will be assured that the model and policies being used have optimized all avenues which terrorist would use to attach United States.
