Religion: The Bible

I would take the Bible with me not simply because Christianity is the major world religion, but rather because of the fact that in order to provide development for any new civilization and sustain its life it is necessary to establish certain moral limits to regulate people’s behavior. It seems to me that from the viewpoint of moral education Bible is the best book that has ever been written. Furthermore, Bible is somewhat a historical book as it contains information about the birth and development of the modern western civilization.

Literature: The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy

I chose particularly this book because in my opinion it provides an amazing illustration of all the areas of human life in the western world. It contains examples and morals connected with such important aspects of people’s lives as love, family, business, and friendship. It shows different problems that can appear in life because of these issues and how they might be solved. It seems to me that in the process of creation and development of a new civilization problems connected with love, friendship, business and family will inevitably occur because human life without these feelings is impossible. And thus The Forsyte Saga will serve as a guidebook for coping with such problems.

Philosophy: Hegel

It seems to me that Hegel’s philosophy is the most influential thing that has ever been developed in this area and that’s why I chose to take it with me. His philosophical system developed the relation between the mind and nature, object and subject and it provides a solid explanation of how human mind operates. It also explains such terms as state and history. I think that Hegel’s philosophy is the basis for the modern philosophical thought of the western world that’s why it is essential to take it in order to build a new civilization.

Music: Opera Carmen by Georges Bizet

In my opinion this opera incorporates everything that such a piece of art should provide for the public – beautiful music, deep underlying idea, and spiritual sense. I think that on the distant planet this opera will serve both as a source of amusement, which I find to be important to sustain life of a new civilization, and as a mean for education, which is absolutely necessary for the development of a new civilization.

Art: Triptych The Haywain by Hieronymus Bosch

I think that this painting in a very persuasive way depicts human vices and the consequences to which they may lead. It is not only a masterpiece of painting art which will serve as a good basis for the development of art on the new planet, but it also has a deep moral context showing the whole path from the origin of the sin to all the horrible consequences for people that accompany it.

Mythology: Greek Myths

I would take Greek myths with me because I think that they lay in the origin of the western civilization and the development of it was greatly influenced by them. Thus Greek myths can as well play a great role in the development of the new civilization. Throughout the whole history of the western countries Greek myths have served as an inspiration for numerous artists in different fields of art, and I’m pretty sure that they will continue to serve this purpose on a distant planet. And without inspiration there is no cultural development.
