Cultural Diverse Nursing Staff on Unit Communication, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 374

Essay

Marianne Jeffers explains that through the ages nurses have provided quality care to their patients. However, with the impact of globalization and social change they have plunged into a multicultural health care environment. This has greatly influenced and redefined quality nursing care in the twenty first century nursing workforce.1 For example; nurses have been recruited from several countries across the world. Even though American Credential agencies have set standards through examination, which must be fulfilled before licensure, inevitably these nurses bring with them their healthcare cultural values.2

Many times they are transferred into the units as communication difficulties regarding perception of age race, sex and country of origin. The names of equipment are not exactly the same; the way patient notes are charted and the interpretation of doctor’s orders pose communication disruptions. Foreign trained nurses are not accustomed to seeing abbreviations such as ASAP.3

This is a communication breakdown which had to be addressed very quickly since it affected execution of a procedure in the unit. They did not understand that it meant as soon as possible. So treatment or procedures were not carried out as ordered. Interestingly they did not ask, but through some observation the problem was discovered. Quickly, administration called them and explained the abbreviation along with some others they did not understand. The matter was resolved and they were encouraged to speak out when they do not understand the orders when written.
