Cyber Crime and Why Digital Forensics Is Important in Todays Society, Essay Example

A cybercrime is also known as a computer crime and implies a type of crime that is committed with the aid of a computer as well as a network. In cybercrime, the computer is either a tool to facilitate the crime of a target of the crime (Aaron, David & Chris, 2009). The definition of cybercrime according to Chuck (2013) is “offences which have been committed against a person or a group of persons having a criminal motive of purposely harming the character of victim or mentally or physically cause harm indirectly or directly to the victim” Chuck (2013). The commission of the crime is facilitated by networks of modern technology including emails, chat rooms, face book, and phone SMS and notice boards facilitated by the internet and mobile phones. Cybercrimes are a potential threat to the financial health as well as security of the nation (Aaron, David & Chris, 2009).

It is therefore imperative that forensic play a significant role in the evaluation of digital media in any society. This is achieved through an application of forensically sound approaches that aims at the identification, preservation, recovery, analysis as well as presentation of available facts as well as opinions concerning major occurrences in the digital information. Computer forensic is commonly allied to investigations of a wide range of computer crimes but it also contributes immensely in the civil proceedings (Aaron, David & Chris, 2009).  Forensic has facilitated easy retrieval of information and it can also effectively aid in legal audit trail. Forensic is also applicable in criminal proceedings. Forensic also plays a crucial role in prevention of fraud as well as financial crimes.
