Essay

Results is an upcoming indie romantic comedy film, written and directed by Andrew Bujalski. The film stars Guy Pearce, Cobie Smulders, and Kevin Corrigan among others.

The film is set in Austin, Texas and centers on Danny (Kevin Corrigan) who is a trust fun entrepreneur. Danny is recently divorced, newly rich and unhappy. His health is also in poor state due to poor eating habits and drug abuse. In order to find health and, happiness, Danny joins a local gym where he meets health guru/owner Trevor (Guy Pearce) and attractive intense trainer Kat (Cobie Smulders). Soon, the lives of these three characters become closely linked to each other, both professionally and personally.

Results focuses on the contemporary self-improvement culture. The central idea is that one can hire a personal trainer, buy different products, or do certain things to improve himself. This may be true but only partially. There are some things in life one cannot buy his way through. This film seems to attack the self-improvement culture which may lead some to believe that improvement in certain areas like physical and mental health will also improve every other aspect of life. The film attempts to convince the viewer that not everything in life pans out as planned but one can still live a happy life for as long as he makes the best out of every situation. The film ends with both Trevor and Kat admitting their love to each other while Danny learns to move on. He demonstrates this by inviting few sorority girls to his house for a party.

The targeted audience for this film is middle-aged women. The film utilizes both humor and romance at an attempt at a cliché theme yet also offers a new look. The film is set for a limited release, first opening on May 29, 2015.

Results is an enjoyable experience. It may not be a perfect creation but the plot is entertaining and enjoyable. It is a well-executed film, with artistic cinematography. The movie seems to have benefitted from generous budget since it doesn’t really look like an indie film. Over all, the message was easy to understand even though the dialogues seemed redundant at times. The targeted audience seemed neither displeased nor excited when the film ended. I may not excitedly recommend this movie to a friend. But if by some horrible turn of events all films except this are destroyed, I won’t mind watching it a second time.
