Data stewardship is a concept applicable in healthcare that involves oversight and management of data assets in the organization aiming at providing the highest quality of data to the business users whose ease of access is consistent. This paper posits to explain how data stewardship and business intelligence apply to health care.

The focus of data stewardship involves tactical coordination coupled with implementation. The responsibilities of data stewards in an organization involves carrying out the usage of data along with security policies as dictated in the governance initiatives of data enterprise. This links the IT department with other business arms in the organization (Beagrie, Brian & Matthew, 2010).

The importance of data stewardship has prompted for the creation of formal positions of data stewards in organizations. The workers in these positions are drawn from other business units while others assign such positions to employees working in other units to accomplish both duties simultaneously (Beagrie, Brian & Matthew, 2010).

The core responsibility of data stewards in health care is to avail health information of a person electronically. The stewards are entitled to practices as well as principles related to identification and use of data purposes, maintaining security safeguards and controls and individual participation.

The next paramount issue that requires attention involves business intelligence. This has the implication of skills as well as instruments that aid in strategically planning for the success of the organization. Upholding the security of patient information is a crucial consideration in health care (Thomas, 2010). This is achieved through the use of locked cabinets and doors where files are stored, safety of employees’ identity cards and correct application of HIPPA rules and regulations. The insurance companies covering health cases along with medical facilities have a duty to uphold the stability as well as security of business intelligence.
