Research Paper

Data is classically perceived as information that is in the form of numbers usually 0s and 1s. The accumulation of data in a given organization is significant towards analyzing situations, as well as determining if any changes are needed or there are potential threats that should be addressed. Data stewardship and business intelligence (BI) are important elements in healthcare setting.  It is vital to remember the fact that the data provided by the patients in healthcare facilities is linked to individuals that have real lives. Therefore, providing confidentiality and protecting this kind of information is important whereby it is one of the reasons the HIPPA was established charged with the responsibility of utilizing data stewardship (Goldman & Hudson, 1999).

Health data stewardship is a duty, which is guided by practices and principles that ensures that promote knowledgeable and appropriate data accrued from personal health information.  Data stewardship is geared towards the electronic accessibility of individual health information. On the other hand, business intelligence entails tools, as well as skills employed to strategically plan the organization’s process. In healthcare sector, it is essential to maintain patient information secured, which can be in form of locked doors, locked cabinet files, identification of cards for workers, as well as usage of HIPPA provisions. In addition, business intelligence demands that insurance firms and medical facilities should have stable and safe practices and plans since in absence of such plan, the organization will face numerous lawsuits. Therefore, data stewardship protects information provided by patients being misused and demands that the users of such information should seek authorization before using the data. Business intelligence ensures that the data provided by patients, especially the insurance firms are strategically planned to keep the data safe (McGraw, 2009).
