David Dorfman, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 322

Essay

Having received his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1977 from Olin Business School in Chicago, David Dorfman decided to apply what he learned to what he loved the most, dancing. He founded his company named as the David Dorfman Dance and has been recognized as one of the country’s leading modern dance companies ever since.

Being a social activist and a teacher, he is known for inculcating the culture of social activism into the dances he has been creating; which mostly is one of his ways of reaching out to the society making it easier for him to make a mark on the audience he desires to impress and express his opinions to.     Among the awards he received includes the National Endowment for Arts which recognizes his contribution to the national development of culture in the country.

Most of the works of Dorfman are considered to be modern-interpretative in nature. This typical sense of development in recognizing the capacity of Dorfman to explore himself and the way he expresses himself through dance identifies well with his notable reputation of being creative and expansive in his research of what good modern dance forms are about. Among the works shown through the links above include Lightbulb Theory and Impending Joy and Prophets of Funk. These two forms of dances represent a definite insistence on how dance movements could be related to emotions and the definite indication of connection that the body has with what the mind thinks.

As for my part, I do think that the movements formed in the Prophets of Funk makes it easier for me to realize such connection. The extension of the legs and the arms and the swinging of the body to and from one direction towards another, makes a distinct sense of connection on how I express myself freely as a dancer and as an individual.
