Essay

What happened?    The hostess of a dinner I was at has a son who has trouble

getting and holding a job. He and his family have difficulty living on social assistance.  Consequently, his parents offered to let them stay with them for awhile.  Several years later, the job situation has not improved, so the son was told to leave by the end of the month (October).   I asked the hostess how this might affect her two grandchildren’s education. Suddenly a 30-year-old nephew of the hostess stood up and told me that not everyone needed a university education.  I told him that I did not mention university.  He went on and on about the need for farmers, carpenters and others.  I kept agreeing. Then he asked me if I did not see the hostess’s face, how I had hurt her and made her think she had failed.  I was completely bewildered.

How did you feel?  Confused, surprised, bewildered, and very hurt.

What language used made you feel bad?  Aggressive, unfair and accusatory.

What motivation theory in chapter 16 sounds the most logical  and effective to you?  The need for achievement (N-Ach).

How could it be applied in the workplace if you were a manager?  Together, the employees and I would set goals.  Positive reinforcement would be given for each success.

What would be the circumstances and the desired result?  The circumstances and result  would be everyone doing his or her job effectively all of the time.
