Decades of Contribution to Health Informatics, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 567

Essay

The original emphasis of the definition on nursing informatics was technology but it has evolved to include the central focus on the concepts of data, information, and knowledge in addition to wisdom. Nursing infomatics has been a specialty within the nursing profession for almost three decades, yet explicitly defining the field remains difficult as several definitions still exist. Experts view infomatics through a conceptual framework that is both role and technology oriented in order to critique past definitions and validate the expanded definition of infomatics as it has evolved. Information systems and support for various nursing practices are bolstered if there is a conceptual edification of nursing information, data, wisdom, and knowledge. Practice development and information integration for nurse practitioners are critical facets of the DNP role within a constantly evolving healthcare system. The interplay of data, knowledge, wisdom, and information has recently evolved with regards to nursing practice in order to accommodate and acclimate to application design in addition to utilization for calculated use by DNPs in various settings (Moen & Knudsen, 2013). DNPs are expected to work well in collaborative contexts, and collaborative efforts will be critical in future in order to keep developing achievements that bolster mobility, changing nursing tasks, and pervasive health care.

Indeed, the development and use of newer technologies to aid nurses in their delivery of healthcare services to their patients/clients spawned various developments of and changes to service tools. Such innovative alterations have unequivocally contributed to the enhancement of the role of and nursing care provided by the DNP, the specialization of healthcare services provide, and patient treatment. As such, medical officials have engaged in discussions regarding how to effectively harness the opportunities that evolving infomatics provides, address quandaries that arise, and avert any harm that germinates amidst transitional periods in the specialty of infomatics. Indeed, the calculated and deliberate utilization of digital mechanisms is one of the most critical strategies for DNPs to address any and all challenges in the healthcare system at the micro and macro levels (Nes & Moen, 2010).

Nursing infomatics address key healthcare issues including information, knowledge, and data which are enhanced by the concept of wisdom. These facets provide conceptual edification to limn clinical processes in comprehensive detail in order the bolster clinical judgments made by the DNP and to integrate nursing representations and practices. Electronic records along with the utilization of other IT applications within primary care settings allow the DNP the effectively handle information while also representing innovative modes for the delivery of healthcare in order to address organizational problems so that effective practice models are incorporated. DNPs are still challenged to adapt to new definitions of infomatics, which means that they must investigate how clinical infomatics can be used in innovative ways and for novel purposes.
