I am Nik. It is expected that you remember me from last week. My story started when I got the perfect job after graduation and ended up in a (so-called) paradise island prone to natural disasters. On top of that, I believe that the (current) love of my life, back home, has yet not house broken, my dog Leonard. Life went in a curve with a low at start, high with the new job and love and seems to be going towards the end of parabola again. What I believed was a home run, was like an easy catch at the end with fielder patiently smiling at the chance. The situation overall all is not that awful. We both know there is going to be a next innings and I am going to hit a home run. Do not smile and I will tell you how I did hit the home run.
With the help of Alex, I got down to business. First of all, I needed all what I could get for the organizational resources. I started making a proposal for Mr. Chris. I wanted to use the technology offered by our company for the benefit of Kava. I proposed an advanced weather center to be established for the advance warnings in case of Tsunami and hurricanes, equipped with latest technologies like satellite imaging and tracker radars. The latest communication set up was also proposed with telephone and electricity wiring put underground to minimize the damage from the hurricanes and storms. I proposed Alex to launch a construction company as a subsidiary of our organization. The purpose was to make use of latest materials which would help sustain high wind pressures and encourage locals to build basements (Department of Education and Children Services, Government of South Australia, 2005). One guessed it, Alex said that do not try to hit a home run on every ball. None the less, she let me put it in the presentation. The other recommendations included to add a media campaign which would attract tourists in the non-monsoon season and early help in case of disaster. Our organization could set up a permanent media base in Kava Department of Education and Children Services, Government of South Australia, 2005).
Next task was to be the training of local human resources. The best way to do it was to get the locals to help themselves. I thought a way to involve ethnic groups (United Nations, 2008). Starting from the lowest level as most of the population was under 15 years which would prove to be a excellent workforce, I proposed a junior baseball league. The different factions will train their teams, and there would be competitions among them, followed by festivities to mingle with each other. This would serve in two ways (Daud, 2006). The first would be to give a sense of belonging in the ethnic group and pride to be a part of the team and secondly to bring the factions of the community together at the common point. Then I wanted to take it further. By getting volunteers from these young groups, I wanted them to work as not only the influence on their elders, but also get them to help clean up the sites with damage under the supervision of elders. In this regard, I wanted to bring over the experts from my organization to train these local volunteer groups in disaster predictions and management focusing specifically on how to hold together and help each other in emergencies and what to do after the disaster has passed. The first thing would be to get the youngsters first aid training. Then develop leadership qualities among the teenagers with the help of talented staff from my organization.
The most difficult part would be to keep a balance between the organizational expenditure and staff and the rate at which it would be charged to Kava. I did not want to put any financial burden to a nation already suffering from natural damages but at the same time I had to keep in view the financial interests of my organization. It could have been done in better ways to ease the burden on the government (Bratton, & Gold, 1999). First was to keep a flat rate between 10 to 15 % of all the expenditures that we incurred during the rehabilitation of the country. Second, was to start some small sized enterprises/business from the organizational resources and generate funds here in Kava like development of the tourism industry both local and international. Another way to do it is to get some shares from the government in the petroleum wells and coffee fields at subsided rates to make up for the resources being put in by our organization. I am not sure how it would work and would leave the matter mostly to my seniors after giving for and counter arguments on this proposal (United Nations, 2008).
Alex liked my ideas overall and said this just might seal the series in our favor. The proposal was sent to the head office for the approval of Mr. Chris Morales. Most of my proposal was approved, and I was made the coordinator to start making arrangements for the different set of operations required. I have found a lovely home by the beach and am planning to bring Leonard over here. I hope he is house broken till now.
