With the tool of the decision tree, management is enabled to engage in speculations of probabilities, and by means of a graphic and accessible concept. The essential value of this tool, wherein a variety of outcomes from the decision-making are manifested as emerging from the “trunk,” is that potentials are more tangibly considered, which assists in the decision process. For example, a healthcare manager may set up a “tree” regarding budget constraints, and from this tree will arise “branches” representing disadvantages and benefits. One extension may be more funds to be allocated to staffing, while another may indicate the probability of supply issues, or limited operational capacities.

Simulation is a tool that permits a reasonable reflection of the decision process in action. The model is simply a representation, or created analogy, of a reality paralleling the actual challenge (Liebler, McConnell, 2008, p. 163). This may be viewed as a more dimensional version of the decision tree, and may be created to any parameters at all. A physician employs simulation when they train on a tangible model of a body undergoing a procedure, as a manager may construct an office simulation to better determine the comfort and efficiency provided by the scheme. In any event, the object of the simulation is to allow a testing arena for the process.

Lastly, the “devil’s advocate” tool allows for viewpoints which inherently challenge the most likely decisions. This tool is commonly used in reflective sessions or meetings, as the manager requests team members to posit projections of both positive and negative potentials from a decision, with an emphasis on those opinions contrary to the most likely decision. Management may, for example, need to restructure policy on stays for hospital patients. This issue on the table, the “devil’s advocate” perception may voice that limitations here will greatly alienate patients and create tension.
