My father used to read to me the narrative of Jack and the Beanstalk. During the time, I was only five years of age. I had the chance to enjoy such story based on the fairy tale setup that it took. My father read the story to me with full control of voice making me imagine who was actually taking in each scene. Each plot came alive with such voice differentiations. He also tried to gesture to define the surroundings of each setting making it easier for me to see the story to come alive right in my very eye. I was able to seek through each reading made by my father for the story’s real value and source of reality. I remember vividly imagining what was happening t each character and how each setting changed based on the direction that the story was taking into account.
Notably, this is the reason why Jack and the Beanstalk served as my favorite narrative of all time. I remember asking my father to read to me the story over and over again until I was nine years of age. The reason for such repetitive request is because I seem to see something new from the story every time my father reads it to me. It seems that each time he presents to me the story, he adds something new. Although my father said that it was not the story, it was the way I interpreted it through the years. The first time it was read to me was when I was four years old. I did not have any analytical concerns at the time, all that I wanted was to have some time spent with my father as he reads to me every night. When I turned seven, I began asking questions about the story hoping that my father would give me something more than what the book says.
As I turned nine years of age, school activities have improved my thinking skills and my father told me how my questions began to grow deeper and become more implicative of the supposed reality of the story. When I ask him why fairy tales are created, he said that the answer ‘to entertain readers’ never sufficed my craving for response. It was as if I wanted to know something more than just the value of fairy tales being a source of entertainment for readers and for children. Learning from school that literary works are created for a reason, my father told me how insisting I was to know what the real value of John and the Beanstalk was in real life.
As I grew older, I realized that the story had a much deeper meaning for me. It imposed a great sense of responsibility, a distinct understanding of what is meant by the elements of narration in the story and the value of each character in the discussion of events that happened in the narrative served a great deal of inspiration to me. I never knew how such an ordinary fairy tale actually gave me a better sense of understanding on what the term ‘responsibility’ means and how life in itself is a course of adventure that each person has to deal with and accept as part of life accordingly.
From this particular common narrative, I realized how a story that is known to many could mean so much for one individual. With every reader having a personal understanding of matters based on his experiences in life, such narratives could present different valuable messages depending on how one perceives such stories. Consistent interpretation of the story come from a more entertaining value of the narration, however, the deeper understanding of the matter becomes more valuable to individuals as they begin to explore the different issues relatively connected to the story. Each element in the context of the story changes in value especially in consideration with the presentation of each change of scenario. Through time, the realization of this matter could be accounted for the enriched experiences of the reader or the listener of the story. This is why the analysis of a nine year old child is seemingly different from the analysis of an older reader of a narrative like that of Jack and the Beanstalk.
