Dell Computers, Research Paper Example

The organization I have selected for this assignment is Dell Computers. At this company, all of the decisions are made are data driven. Dell takes care to make its manufacturing decisions based off of consumer research that provides information concerning what consumers want and attempts to satisfy their needs. Interestingly, these decisions typically occur at the company’s highest level; the vice chairman of each division is responsible for making choices according to his or her specialty.

Although the complete Product Life Cycle for the company is not available, they have reported that they take great care to ensure that their products are environmentally conscious and they provide support to ensure that customers have a working product at their fingertips. In general, it is assumed that Dell Computers followed the life cycle of other companies in this industry and it is considered to be in the “mature stage” in which it does not have to worry about its stability. Furthermore, it needs to remain competitive and is multi-tiered, which is standard for a mature company.

Issues for product development are taken care of through thorough research that helps the company to identify the best answer. The company has employed psychologists, scientists, and other professionals to help them determine what the best decisions are in these cases. Ultimately, these decisions are made from bottom up, in which individuals with the greatest knowledge about the subject will make the decision, with final approval from their supervisors and company executives. In this manner, the best decision for product development is made. Overall, data driven decisions are the preferred mode of decision making at this company.
