The connection between individual personality and cognition style to dejection is well known. Several issues have been linked with neuroticism, low self-esteem, and introversion among others. The study addressed two issues that were two answer questions on personality in relation with the history of postnatal depression in women in comparison to healthy control. Secondly, measures of personality relating to w omen with persistence major depressive disorder and have not experienced prenatal event s.
Methods
Samples
Women patients suffering from major recurrent depression and were not in the depression episode were chosen and then divided into two sub-groups: those with the history of postnatal depression, and those who did not have episodes of dejection related to childbirth. Secondly, a healthy female control group (Jones et al., 2010). The women were investigated on genetic and non-genetic factors of the condition. To get the sample patients were screened to determine the ones with the condition. The patients were required to give voluntary information of their conditions.
Psychiatric tests
The patients were interviewed face to face in their houses by professionals. In addition, records from clinical tests were also used. Questions were asked about the condition to get data about the symptoms to establish if the episode met DSM-IV principle s for the condition in question.
Definition of postnatal episodes
Only the parous ones were involved in the examination. An episode was described as an episode of DSM-IV major depression in the six weeks of childbirth. Women that had given birth and did not experience the condition were 143 and those who experienced were 131 women. Moreover, the parous ones were 105.
Questionnaires
They were self-rated ones and included Rosenberg Self-Esteem Questionnaire (SEQ), which deals with self-esteem, Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS) that measures attitudes and beliefs, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) that gives personality, and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) that gives the extent of the condition.
Procedure
The patient recruited systematically and the volunteer procedure was similar. The questionnaires were to be filled with a specified period of one week, and if there were not received within a month, the patients were reminded. Moreover, all ethics were observed.
Statistical analysis
The three groups in the sample were compared in relation to their age. The questionnaire distributions in the classes were found to be normal. Moreover, the data analyses were carried out using version 14.0 of SSP for windows (Jones et al., 2010).
Results
The women who had not experienced the condition (NPND) were significantly older, an average age of 53 years, than those who had experience the condition (PND) and the control group in the research, which had an average age of 47 and 49 year respectively (Jones et al., 2010).
Discussion
Postnatal mood disorders
It was found that the mood disorders in relationship to giving birth are issues that lead to most suicide, which are the leading reasons of maternal death in the United Kingdom (Jones et al., 2010). Other researchers have shown that the women who suffer the condition is in relation to giving birth and the start of depression.
Personality and cognitive style
The results suggest that women with the condition in question related to childbirth shows characteristics depressogenic reports with a very low self-esteem and negative self-evaluation. There were no different personality characteristics between the two groups in the sample (Jones et al., 2010).
Recommendation
However, in the future studies, three-group model should be included to distinguish the factors that influence the dejection diathesis and the condition in particular.
