Descartes Meditation, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 633

Essay

Okay that’s plenty about Descartes. What are the issues?

There are two main issues with Descartes meditations. Firstly, he announced the two driving issues of meditation at the opening and secondly, he proved immortality of soul and the existence of God through natural reason. These two assumptions have been criticized widely in literatures at this age when the Soul and God are respected. Religion believes that the soul does not perish after death of a body.

What’s the issue?

Descartes is certain that he exists since he has the ability to think. The main issue with this certainty is that he does not take into account the inactivity of human mind in the event of deep sleep. He believes that human existence is facilitated by thinking. Unless in the event of a dream, human thinking is absent in deep sleep which is independent of dreams.

Why would he do such a thing is he is in search of certainty?

Descartes is involved in his study since he does not believe in common believes of his society. For instance, he wonders why he exists when his senses are questionable. He believed that his senses have tricked him at difference instances, for example, human beings are small when observed from an airplane, which ideally not true.

Why does Descartes want to find certainty?

Descartes wants to find certainty in order to eliminate the methodic doubt on the nature of reality. For instance, he claims to believe in anything that has justification. Human beings cannot appeal anything they cannot conceive. In addition, we judge a situation using methods that guarantee certainty of ideas.

Off topic. Should be about evil demons and second meditation?

Based on evil demons and second medication, Descartes acknowledges the role of evil demons in human beings. They present an illusion of the real world to drive a human being into involving in a situation. They are cunning and deceitful in order to trap all bodily sensations since they lack the bodily features.

Transitional sentence

This a transitional sentence since he presents logic to mathematic. For instance, based on the mathematical hypothesis that 2 + 3 = 5, he argues that the result is cannot vary, so dies the sides of a square. This explanation is to link mathematical logics to his believe on the evil demon theory.

How could such a thing fool Descartes about simple things math and beliefs?

Descartes believed that mathematics was the foundation of all beings. Conversely, he recognizes there are other powerful beings that can fool him, for instance, the existence of God. He also doubts the above assumption since he believed that all God’s works are supposedly all good. Based on the mathematical hypothesis that 2 + 3 = 5, he argues that God cannot lie, but, on the other side, demons are extremely cunning and deceptive.

What about the belief that I exist?

Descartes argument of existence is based on three factors: “I think,” “If I think, I exist,” and “Hence I exist.” With the above three factors, Descartes is certain that he exists. He also states that the fact that he has a face, arms, hands, and the rest of the body organs is a proof that he exists. As such, human beings have memories that attribute certain occurrences and events to specific feelings.

Why couldn’t the evil being make you think you are a thinking thing when you’re really not?

The evil cannot make a person think that he/she is a thinking being when a person is not evil is termed as omnipotent and, as such, unable to alter mathematics as well as fundamentals of existence. Descartes was unable to determine whether a person in deep sleep can be classified as being since he/she lacks the thinking capacity. At such moments, consequently, the evil being cannot act on a human being and make him/her think is thinking being.
