Essay

The period 1775 to 1800 marks the most important phase of American history with regards to its establishment as a political sovereignty. It was a phase of uprising, freedom, formulation of government and establishing democracy.

The War for America, 1775-1783

The war for America was the first of its kind to establish independence and sovereignty of the country. A battle better interpreted to sow the seeds of patriotism and anti imperialism. Often referred as American War of Independence, the conflict was between Britain and thirteen of its colonies in North America.

Britain, as usual with their imperialistic methods, rejected preliminary rights of the colonists. This led to an upsurge among the colonists, and in 1775 revolutionaries gained control of the British colonies. It also led to the formation of Second Continental Congress, allied by its Continental Army.

This war made the Americans realize their rights to freedom and proper representation in the government. This was a major way forward in establishing a political system and infrastructure in the country. Indeed, the event was the foundation block of an independent nation.

Building a Republic, 1775-1789

The revolution for freedom was a success. But it could be fatal, unless channelized in a concrete framework. Thus the major task for America after the war was to reconcile and sustain the ownership. In 1780, America faced the huge challenge of managing the affairs of the people or the government. They needed to capsule set of rules and policies for self government.

They also realized pretty soon the dangers of autocratic powers vested in the individual states. So America integrated its resources, will and power to form a centralized national government.

During the period 1776 to 1781, the Second Continental Congress served as the first government of America. It had no constitutional basis but eventually it received its recognition after the Congress promulgated the Articles of Confederation into it.

Debates, criticism, resistance and confrontation to build a strong foundation paid off. Bits and pieces assembled to form a solid constitutional framework, an essential aid to build a strong republic and finally a superpower.

The New Nation Takes Form, 1789-1800

A battle was won; a constitution promulgated and then comes the important step of building the government. The domestic as well as external crisis evolved different versatile political opinions. During the beginning there was the supremacy of the federalists. They dominated the Congress and the presidency during 1790 and even initiated efforts to strengthen the economy. They vehemently supported and worked for the federalist lobby. However, opposition is the major element in a successful government. Here the anti federalists or the republican emerged to give a rationale to all decisions of the government.

During 1800 America had fully fledged political parties with Federalist and Republican labels, who worked for a better and stronger American government.

The period between 1775-1800, marks the most important period of the American history. During this time America framed, crafted and was instrumental in building the political pattern of the country. The arousing within the people for their rights and prejudices, the step by step process of governmental set up, the formation of political parties and a constitution, all poignant factors for the establishment of a democracy like America.
